When Jon and I lived in Indiana, our dear friends Wes and Christy introduced us to a great little butcher shop in Knightstown, Indiana. We found that we could buy pork burger patties there. We used to get a pork burger each time we went to the Indiana State Fair, so we were pretty excited to find that we could get them anytime. We always stocked up on a few boxes when we went to the meat locker. They were so good, Jon’s parents would have us buy them a box and bring it to South Carolina when we would visit them. Jon and I would plan trips to Knightstown about every month to go and stock our freezer with their awesome burgers, steaks, and bacon! It was a little bit of a drive for us to get there (about an hour and a half….I’m a Hoosier; we measure distance in time), but it was well worth the drive. We still make a visit whenever we visit Indiana.
So what is a Pork Burger? It’s ground pork (don’t confuse it with sausage, because it’s not sausage), seasoned with seasoning salt, and grilled. Put the burger on a bun, and you have a Pork Burger. I like to put cheddar cheese, lettuce, and barbecue sauce on mine. Jon tends to put hot sauce on his. No matter what toppings get put on the burger, it is pretty delicious.
Ingredients:
1lb ground pork (not ground sausage)
Seasoning salt, to taste
4 hamburger buns
Favorite burger toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, cheese, onion, mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce, etc
Preheat a gas-grill to medium-high heat.
Divide the ground pork into four equal parts and form into four patties. Season each side of the patties with seasoning salt (as little or as much as you like).
Grill the pork burgers on medium-high heat until they are cooked through, making sure to turn the patties over halfway through cook time.
Allow the burgers to rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute throughout the burger. Look at those grill-marks! Didn’t Jon do an awesome job grilling the burgers???!!!!
Build the Pork Burger on the buns and add burger toppings. As I said before, I like cheddar cheese, lettuce, and barbecue sauce on mine, but use whatever you like.
Serve the Pork Burgers with your favorite side, such as Fiesta Corn!
