This past Sunday, Jon and I enjoyed a plateful of Crispy French Toast before we went to the Art Market to take photographs for the newspaper. The weather was super nice. There was a great breeze and it was 90 degrees. Hard to believe it’s April, and we’ve already had a 90 degree day!
This was our first time making the Crispy French Toast. We’ve had it at a local restaurant, but they’re closed on Sundays, so Jon suggested we try to make our own. We love cooking breakfast on Sundays.
What makes the French toast crispy? It becomes crispy when you coat the bread in a cereal before you pan fry it. You can use many different kinds of cereals to coat the bread such as: Honey Bunches of Oats (that’s what we used), raisin bran, sugary cornflakes, or any other sugary cereal you like. The sugar in the cereal caramelizes and makes such a beautiful color on the toast. Top it off with some maple syrup, and you’ve got a delicious Crispy French Toast breakfast. What cereal are you going to use?
Ingredients:
2 eggs
¼ cup milk
1/8 tsp ground clove
1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp salt
1 and ½ cups sweet cereal (we used Honey Bunches of Oats)
4 large slices of sweet bread (we used a sweet Hawaiian bread)
Butter and maple syrup for serving
In a bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, ground clove, ground cinnamon, salt, and vanilla extract together. In a separate bowl, add in the cereal.
Dip each side of a slice of bread into the egg mixture.
Then dip each side of the slice of bread into the cereal.
Cook each side of the bread on medium heat in a non-stick skillet for about 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown.
Repeat dipping each slice of bread into the egg mixture and cereal and cooking the French toast.
Cut each piece of Crispy French Toast into triangles.
Arrange the slices of French toast on a plate and top with a pad of butter. Drizzle with maple syrup.
