In my opinion, one of the best breakfast foods is French Toast. I LOVE it. It’s one of the first breakfast meals I learned to make. I was pretty young when I learned how to make French toast. I was so amazed how easy it was to make something that delicious.
One thing that can sometimes discourage me from cooking French toast on the weekends, is knowing I have to stand at the stove, flipping only a few pieces of bread at a time. If you’re having breakfast with family and friends, or several people, it’s nice to have something that does the work for you. A way to get the work done is to turn meals into casseroles and bakes. With a little bit of prep work, you can simply combine ingredients, transfer them to a baking dish, and let the oven do the cooking. Then, all you have to do is sit back and sip coffee while you wait.
Our Baked Apple French Toast is an easy breakfast to put together and looks so gorgeous! If you make this for your next breakfast, you won’t be disappointed.
Ingredients:
6-8 slices sourdough bread (or other dense bread), cut into 1 inch cubes
4 eggs
1/3 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ cup brown sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
1 large Granny Smith apple, peeled and chopped (or other apple variety of your choice)
½ tsp lemon juice
½ cup chopped pecans or almonds
Powdered sugar for dusting
Maple or pancake syrup for serving
Combine the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in a small mixing bowl. Stir until it is mixed well. Set aside.
Next, in another mixing bowl, combine the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Whisk until all is combined.
Add 2 tbsp of the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture to the egg mixture and stir.
Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and gently fold until all of the bread is covered in egg mixture. Set aside to allow the bread to soak up the eggs, about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, peel and chop the apple. Toss with the lemon juice.
Next, toss the apple with 1 tbsp of the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.
Add the apples to the soaked bread. Gently fold until combined.
Transfer the bread and apples to a greased baking dish.
Combine the chopped pecans or almonds with the remaining brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.
Sprinkle the nut and sugar mixture over the top of the bread and apples.
Bake the Apple French Toast on 375 degrees Fahrenheit, uncovered, for 25-30 minutes.
Cut the baked French toast into 8 slices.
